S. AFRICAN TRADE
Support For Boycott (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 20. The Northern Drivers’ Union is to seek support from all in the transport industry to help any group refusing to handle imports from or exports to South Africa. Delegates to the union’s annual convention also decided that in the event of any prolonged effort against South Africa, the Federation of Labour should be asked to call a special conference to determine a national policy on the issue.
The executive report to the convention suggested that an effective policy against the high price of sugar could be nationalisation of the Colonial Sugar Refining Company. However, before any such move was made, it would be necessary to find sources of cheap raw sugar. The delegates were opposed to New Zealand sending any troops to fight in Malaysia and South-east Asia. A more effective policy, they considered, which would ultimately benefit New Zealand through trade, was economic, technical and educational aid.
