WINE PRICE RISE

No More To Public

An increase in New Zea-land-produced wine prices of about 4s a dozen bottles will not be passed on to the public in the Canterbury district, but will be absorbed by the local hotel industry. Asked to comment on reports from other centres of New Zealand that wine prices had to be increased by up to Is a bottle as from July 1, the president of the Canterbury Hotels’ Association (Mr A. F. G. McGregor) said that locally-produced wines were still retailing at the same prices.

Some major manufacturers had increased their prices for standard sweet and dry sherries and port wines by about 4s a dozen bottles, he said, but this had been absorbed by the hotel industry. However, table wines, cocktails and liqueurs were to be increased by 6d a bottle, Mr McGregor said. This increase would not take place until all members of his association had been officially notified.
