Aid For Teaching Of Technology

fA’ew Zealand Press Associations WELLINGTON, July 20. The rate of annual grants to technical institutes has been increased by more than 1 o ,000. Announcing this today, the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) said £lO,OOO was to provide for employment of more non-teaching staff.

The increase included £6900 * year at the Auckland Technical Institute, of which nearly £5OOO was for the additional non-teaching staff, and £5140 at Wellington Polytechnic. including a little more than £3OOO a year for non-teaching staff.

For the Central Institute of Technology, the increase would be £3090, of which just over £2lOO was fo- extra nonteaching staff.

Mr Kinsella said the special requirements of the institutes fcr qualified library, laboratory and office staff had been clear for some time. “The difficulty has lain in

devising an adequate replacement for the present financing system, which is a carryover from secondary school practice, that would provide for the running costs of these complex institutes and cover the employment of a larger nnn.teaching staff, a relatively new factor in our considerations in New Zealand.” Mr Kinsella said the Increased grants might be re garded as an interim measure only. They would allow the institutes to meet their most urgent needs for non-teaching staff. They also gave grants for other running cost increases in proportion to the teaching load at each institute.
