Herewini Inspires Maori Victory

(New Zealand Press Association)

SUVA, July 19. The All Black, M. A. Herewini, played brilliantly and scored nine points when the touring New Zealand Maori team beat Suva, 21-11, on Saturday. Suva was outwelghted in the forwards by about a stone a man, and the Maori backs had ample opportunities to score. However, Suva was by no means disgraced and was able to give almost as much as it took, having the Maoris worried on several ocasions before they scored. Suva started with a flourish, winning all the ball from the line-outs and forcing the Maoris back. After 10 minutes the Suva forwards toed the ball through the Maori defence and over the goal line. Two or three players dived on it but the referee awarded a scrum 20 yards back. The scoring drought ended after 30 minutes when Herewini initiated an orthodox back movement from inside the Suva 25 and Tokl scored in the corner. Herewini converted from the side line. Herewini gave another

exhibition of his kicking skill two minutes later when he landed a penalty from 45 yards. Soon after Herewini received the ball from a line-out and fooled the opposition by kicking across field instead of passing. Myers took the ball and crossed without opposition. At halftime, Maoris led 11-6. After five minutes in the second half Herewini again kicked across field for Toki to score and again he converted. Suva replied when Rasiosatekl kicked a penalty, but then Cressy, the Maori half-back, received the ball from a scrum and dived over the line. Herewini converted with another magnificent kick from near the sideline. Rasiosatekl was successful with a second penalty and the Fijians scored the best try of the match in the dying minutes when Rasiosatekl made a break from his own 25.

He outpaced most ot the Maoris and the ball went from Mocelutu to Suluaqalo who went over beside the posts. Tabualevu converted.
