Education Districts

Sir, —The Canterbury Education • Board has made an effort to obtain the assistance of the Otago Education Board in defeating the recommendation of the Education Districts Boundaries Commission that an Ashburton-South Canterbury-Waitaki education district be established. It is worth while to look at the views of the secretary-man-ager. of the Otago Board (Mr W. A. J. Perry). A Dunedin newspaper quotes Mr Perry as saying: “There might be grounds for splitting the Canterbury district, as it had been recognised for some time as being too large.” An effort is being made to whip up opposition among school committees, but Mr Boulton said that because expense was based on a percentage of capitation, no extra annual administration costs would be involved. Mr Boulton took into account population growth, and also the Education .Commission’s recommen-

dalton that there be unification of pre-school, primary and post-primary administration, and that regional education districts be established. McKECHNIE. Geraldine, July 19, 1964.
