The Traffic Plan

Sir, —While revisiting London, in answer to my inquiry

I received a letter from the Bailiff of Royal Parks, London, stating: “The amount of park land taken for widening Park Lane was 181 acres from Hyde Park and 3} acres from Green Park.” All the Royal Parks in London have motor roads through them: Bushy Park, Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Regents Park, Richmond Park, and St. James Park. Like Auckland and some New Zealand urban areas, the London County Council also opens its parks to the motorist, i.e. Battersea Park, Finsbury Park, nd Dulwich Park, also Clapham Common and Wimbledon Common and, a few miles out, Epping Forest and the Lido at St. Albans. The early pioneers had foresight and ’realised the necessity to provide roads through Hagley Park for their transport. Why proscribe present-day private transport?—Yours etc. S. NEWELL.
