“Monthly Review”

Sir,—l note with interest in this morning’s paper the familiar tactics of extremists in their efforts to subvert yet another organisation. I have personally observed these not-so-clever efforts of “packing” meetings with fellow supporters to obtain unrepresentative opinions and committees. 1 have seen this occur with these same people at Students’ Congress 1962, and at several annual general meetings of the Students’ Association, when previously unannounced, contentious motions were brought up in the early hours of the morn-

ing at the end of the meeting. In these instances the same people were invariably reluctant to accept the chairman's rulings and normal democratic processes. These observations may be of interest to persons interested in the welfare of the “Monthly Review”.—Yours MICHAEL B. JAMESON. July 1, 1964.

Sir, —In your article concerning the New Zealand Monthly Review Society, there are, unfortunately, several serious errors of fact which I would like to point out. First, the “Monthly Review” is not showing a credit. In 1962-63, the publication loss of the society was £340; in 1963-64, the loss was £3OO. In the latter period, there was an over-all loss of £lOO on the society’s operations. Second, the circulation of the “Monthly Review” is not “some thousands”; it is, rather, even on the former secretary’s calculations, 1500. Third, it is humorous to hear Mr Rosenberg say that “a small crowd” attended! the total attendance, 28, was some four times, the usual attendance at the annual meeting. I could only say that I was shocked at the reluctance of the chairman and ex-secre-tary to accept majority decisions.—Yours etc., SOCIETY MEMBER. July 1, 1964.
