Republican Candidate

IN.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 30. Mr Henry Cabot Lodge said yesterday he had returned from South Vietnam primarily to help the Republican Party nominate a presidential candidate who would be “prudent” in foreign affairs and faithful to his party’s support of civil equality. He avoided a personal attack on Senator Barry Goldwater, but indicated that he was opposed to the Senator’s approach to major foreign and civil rights problems. Mr Lodge emphasised that he favoured Governor William Scranton, of Pennsylvania, for the nomination because he was “prudent and he is not impulsive.” He insisted he could not be drafted for the nomination himself and he said it was too early to decide whether he would support Mr Goldwater if the latter was nominated.
