CLERICAL WORKERS

Unions To Be Merged The national executive of the 22,000 strong. New Zealand Clerical Workers’ Union was planning a major merger of its affiliates, says the latest issue of the union’s official journal, “Clerical News.” “It foresees one national union, in place of the six Independent unions linked to it at present,” says the journal.

While this meant that members would surrender" their individual rights as a union, says the journal, it also meant that the financial strictures, which had in the past operated unfairly on the smaller unions, would be overcome by the appointment of paid organisers in each district. These would be. financed by the central office.

“It is proposed that by 1968 the fees charged to members should be. uniform throughout the country,” the journal says. “It is also planned to. establish a central office in Wellington Jn the near future.”

Stowaways.—Two stowaways found in the passenger liner Fairsky were confined to the ship during its one-day stay in Auckland. No charges .will be laid against the men jn New Zealand. They, will be put off in Sydney where they .boarded the liner: She sailed yesterday.—(P.A.)
