A. AND P. APPEAL

Organisation Of Campaign

The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s centennial appeal for at least £65,000 to improve the Show Grounds at Addington was carried a stage further on Monday evening when the first of a series of business meetings to complete the organisation of the campaign in the province was held in the Wool Exchange. This meeting was concerned with the organisation of the appeal to members of the association in the Christchurch area and to business houses and commercial and professional people in the city. The first of the country meetings was ' held at Waipara last and others will follow quickly in other rural districts.

Mention was made during the meeting of a Christchurch firm which had indicated its intention, of giving £lOOO towards the appeal, and it was reported that a North Island member of the association who attended the buffet luncheon last week, at which the appeal was initiated, had' given a donation on the spot. The campaign chairman and president of the association (Mr W. R. Oliver) announced that a brochure about'the appeal was now in the post to members of the association and prospective donors.

In it Mr Oliver says: “Whether they are large or small, here or overseas, show associations find that their continued existence now depends on attracting larger crowds through the gates by emphasising entertainment in their ring programmes. To keep up with this modern trend we must make major additions to the equipment of the show grounds, particularly of spectator accommodation, which is now very badly overtaxed.” *■
