DISPUTE ON PAY
Tradesmen In Railways <W.Z. Fret* Auociatibn) .WELLINGTON, June 29. Many apprentices could not understand why, on becoming indentured tradesmen, they received no more pay than those who had not served an apprenticeship, Mr S. M. G. Letica, advocate for the Rail* way Tradesmen's Association, told the Railways Tribunal today. Mr Letica was opposing a claim* by the Railways Department seeking an increase of 2d to 3|d an hour in the rates of .pay for employees in the general division, and making a counter-claim of an increase of 2s'an hour in the rate of pay for indentured tradesmen above that proposed by the department. The application by the department involves rates of pay in excess of 6s lljd an hour, and exempts employees who - have had granted an additional ljd an hour in an earlier order. The Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, which claims the retention of 2}d an hour granted to indentured tradesmen in 1962, also opposes the department’s claim.
Mr R. W. McKenzie, advocate for the department, said conditions of State employees were fairly related to industry.
