Impaled By Guard Rail

"The Press" Special Service WANGANUI. June 39. Space (H. Treweek) screwed badly when Jumping the third fence in the Hack and Hunters' Hurdles at Wanganui today and crashed threagh the guard rail. The horse was impaled by a portion of the guard rail and was subsequently destroyed. The club’s veterinary surgeon. Mr J. M. Stewart, reported that the stake which injured the horse had penetrated inside the shoulder blade but outside the ribs so as to emerge through the skin behind the girth. A rib was fractured when the stake struck against the fence as the horse moved away from the

scene of the accident, puncturing the chest cavity. Mr Stewart said the injuries were not sufficiently grave «o necessitate destroying the hone had it been a mare, and the damage would have been less serious had the horse been caught and held straight after the accident. Treweek said that Ms mount had received no interference and that the hone jumped through the guard rail for no apparent reason. Tteweek suffered no injuries ether than a shaking.
