JOHANNESBURG, June 28. The South African test cricketer, Peter Carlstein, yesterday married the nurse who helped look after his little daughter after his first wife and their three other children were killed in a road smash last February. At the time of the accident. Carlstein, aged 25, was in New Zealand with the touring Springbok cricket team, and he left immediately for South Africa. His marriage to Carol Ann Roos, aged 21, took place on the third birthday of his daughter Marlene, who was present. The announcement of his engagement, about two
months after the death of his wife, Jacqueline, and the three children, provoked a country-wide controversy. Carlstein received a large number of critical letters and telephone calls, which in turn caused many wellwishers to send him sympathetic messages. He lost his job as a Durban representative for a Johannesburg firm and expressed his belief it was partly due to the controversy over his engagement. Carlstein soon obtained another job which took him to the United States on a visit, and he returned to South Africa only four days before the wedding. The best man was another Springbok cricketer, Ken Walter.
