Basketball COUNTRY TEAM
Huninui Wins Final Sub-association representative teams competed in Christchurch on Saturday in their annual tournament for the, Forscutt Cup. From the outset it was apparent that the standard of play had risen appreciably, and in the first round, last year’s winner, Lincoln; lost by three goals to the little-favoured Banks Peninsula team. Capitalising on this success, Banks Peninsula then forced North Canterbury to a draw. Hurunui, too. displayed splendid form in all games, and in the final its soundness in all areas of play brought victory over a tiring Banks Peninsula side.
Results:— Banks Peninsula 16, Lincoln 13: Banks Peninsula 12, Ellesmere 11; Hurunui 9. North Canterbury 9: Banks Peninsula 12, North Canterbury 12; Hurunui 14, Ellesmere 11; Hurunui 14, Lincoln 8: Ellesmere 9, . North Canterbury 9; Ellesmere 13, Lincoln 8; Lincoln 13, North Canterbury 13; Hurunui 18, Banks Peninsula 13. After the tournament, the Canterbury senior selectors Mrs A. Nichol, Mrs 0. Shannahan, and Miss H. Yates) announced the names of the following players, who would attend a further trial from which the Canterbury SubAssociation team to compete in the New Zealand tournament at Dunedin would be chosen:— K. Butt, P. Black, S. Smith, C. Chapman (Banks Peninsula), S. Davey, R. Quigley, M. Denton, M. Manning (Hurunui), J. Kitchlng, L. Mugford, J. Coe, J. Glasson (Ellesmere), N. Breach. H. Gartery, G. Cossar, H. Hobson (North Canterbury), B. Gilbert, D. Morten, E. Lang (Lincoln). M. Anderson (Hurunui) was not available for selection.
