July 13 Set
CV.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 29. The Indecent Publications Tribunal will consider the books “Lolita,” by Vladimir Nabokov, and “No Adam in Eden,” by Grace Metalious, within the next two weeks.
Sir Kenneth Gresson. chairman of the tribunal, said tonight he had set July 6 for the start of hearings on “No Adam in Eden” and July 13 for “Lolita.” The Council for Civil Liberties with the leave of the Attorney-General (Mr Hanan) has brought "Lolita” before the tribunal. Mr Justice Hutchison, in the Wellington Supreme Court in 1960, found the book indecent under the then Indecent Publications Act, and a majority decision of the Court of Appeal in 'March, 1961, upheld the decision.
“No Adam in Eden” has been brought before the tribunal by the Comptroller of Customs.
The tribunal, which came into being on January 1, has considered only one book so far. It decided that “Another Country,” by James Baldwin, was not indecent.
