17 Chch. Nominations For N.Z. Surf Team
The Canterbury senior surf race and belt champion, G. Dann (New Brighton), Is only one of 17 nominations by Christchurch surf life-saving clubs for the New Zealand learn to visit Australia next season. Nominations for the team, which is
Offord and J. van der Grlend. expected to number about 11 surfers, close with the national council in Wellington this evening. Perhaps the most surprising nomination is that of D. Quane, a former New Zealand surf ski champion, by the Sumner club. Quane was not entered for the national surf ski championship last season by the club on the grounds that he had not represented it consistently in Canterbury carnivals. At the time, Quane said he would not compete for the club again. J. A. Lee, at 33, is the oldest of the nominations, but one with strong claims to a place. He is one of the best team members In the country and for many seasons has finished well up in the New Zealand surf and belt race championships. He was nominated by South Brighton.
Five of last season's juniors are among the nominations. They are P. W. Stevens (Waimairl), the Canterbury junior surf ski and surf ski rescue champion, G. Bacon (New Brighton), runner-up for the Canterbury junior belt title, A. B. McDonald (Waimairi), the Canterbury junior belt champion, A. Harrow (Taylor’s Mistake), the Canterbury junior surf race champion, and L. Richards (South Brighton). The complete Canterbury nominations, all made at club level, are:— Waimairi.—P. W. Stevens. A.
