NEW LEAD IN SWAMP SEARCH

PHILADELPHIA (Mississippi),
June 29.
Two white men similar to two of the three missing civil rights workers were seen near the edge of a swamp 12 hours after their disappearance. A highway patrol investigator, Gwin Cole, said today that a local resident had reported sighting the men.
Mr Cole declined to elaborate on the latest development other than to say the resident said the men were standing near a station waggon. The vehicle was near the side road in the Bogue Chitto swamp where the burned out vehicle of the missing civil rights workers was found last Tuesday.
I Those missing are Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner I and a Negro named James Chaney. The highway patrol witness said one of the men he saw was heavy like Schwerner, and the other was lighter. Truce Possible There is a possibility of a truce in the racial conflict in St. Augustine. Florida, for the first time in nearly two weeks A new effort to establish a bi-racial committee to seek peace is reported to be nearing success. There have been almost no communications between the two races for more than a week, following the collapse of the first effort to find a settlement.
