Read Breaks Walk Record
(N.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, June 28. After his record-breaking 50kilometre walk at Hawera on Saturday, the 1956 Olympic gold medalist, N. Read, is confident of selection for the New Zealand athletics team to Tokyo. In a solo time trial, and handicapped by rain and a blustery wind, Read returned 4hr 24min 45.25ec for the distance, almost a minute under the Olympic record set by. D. Thompson. (Britain) at Rome. The fact that nominations for the Tokyo team have already closed does not trouble Read, for he was put in the Melbourne team about a week before the start of the Games.
