Id Increase In Hourly Rates
City Council attendants, custodians, cleaners and airport wardens had all had their hourly rates increased by Id, with the exception of Swimming baths attendants, said the secretary of the- Canterbury Cleaners’ Union (Mr L. Lee).
The new rates, he said, would be operative for two years from June 15, 1964. The special agreement between the union and council includes an unqualified preference clause.
In addition to the wage increase the workers how have a service bonus of 4s a week after 12 months’ service with the City Council. Other new fringe benefits included such items as a 5s a week laundry allowance for female rest room attendants; an extra Is a day transport allowance for workers’ transport, other than airport wardens, when the worker is required to begin or cease work after the scheduled transport services are available; ' all workers on the completion of 10 years’ continuous service shall be entitled to receive an annual holiday of 15 working days on full pay; and workers with less than 10 years’ continuous service will be entitled to receive an annual holiday of 12 working days on full pay on the completion of each year’s service. Under the agreement, attendants at men’s conveniences and women’s rest rooms will receive three weeks’ annual holiday on full pay irrespective of the length of service; airport cleaners will receive an allowance of 2s 6d a day for every day they are required to work broken time; shift workers will be paid an allowance of 4s a shift; and the council will meet the cost of dry-cleaning the airport wardens’ uniforms once each three months. The agreement was signed by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) and the Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie).
