Fine After Frost
After a cold night, yesterday was sunny with a,steady rise in the temperature. A frost of 11 degrees was recorded at Harewood, with seven degrees at the Botanic gardens. The temperature recorded at Harewood fose from 30 degrees at 9 a’jn. to' 45 degrees at midday, and reached a maximum of 51 degrees at 3 p.m. In the afternoon, a light to moderate north-east-erly blew, and a little high cloud dimmed the sunlight £227 Stolen-
The sum of £227 and £7 7s worth of cigarettes were stolen from the Wycola .Fruit Supply, at 44 Wycola avenue, Hei Hei, on Saturday night The shop is owned by Mr M. J. Wallace. Entry was gained when a rear window was smashed. The money was taken from the till.
High Honour ' The '. highest honour to be bestowed by Taranaki Maoris was on Saturday conferred on the GovernorGeneral (Sir Bernard Fergusson) and Lady Fergusson. They were adopted as members of the Raukura tribe at a short ceremony at Manukorihi Pa, Waitara. Sir Bernard Fergusson and Lady Fergusson were presented with p three white feathers. These were placed on their hats. The three feathers are an emblem of the Taranaki Maori prophet, Te Whiti, and represent the trinity. The honour was conferred on their Excellencies by Mrs Ngati Watson, an elder of the tribe, during a commemoration service for the late Sir Maui Pomare. —(P.A.)
Vandalism Children are believed to be responsible for vandalism at the railway workshops at Addington between 11.15 aim. and 3 p.m. yesterday. The reclaim shop and the tarpaulin, shop were broken into, fire extinguishers were emptied over the floor, and files and tins of cleanser were scattered about and employees’ lockers forced open and ransacked. If was not known last evening whether anything had been stolen.
