INCREASES UP TO £750 IN SALARIES

Increases of up to £750 for senior officials of some Government departments have been provided for in this year’s Estimates.

The largest increase has gone to servicemen, provision being made for salaries of £4OOO. to be paid to one majorgeneral, one air vice-marshal and two rear-admirals. The salaries for" the former two officers last year were £3250. Two rear-admirals received £2430 and £1620 for service during part of last year. The Clerk of the House of Representatives, Mr H. N. Dollimore, is given a rise of £7OO, bringing his total salary to £3500. The Law Draftsman’s salary is raised from £3OOO to, £3500.

Railways In the Railways estimates, the assistant general manager has his salary raised from £3.125 to £3700. Increases of £5OO bring the salaries of two assistant commissioners of works to £3700 and that of the administra-

tion assistant commissioner to £3500.

The chief civil engineer, chief engineer (power), Government Architect and director of reading are also given £5OO increases, bringing their salaries to £3500. Three assistant secretaries of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research receive £5OO increases bringing them to the £3500 level. Members of the State Services Commission will also get £3500 a year—a rise of £5OO.

The deputy director-general of the Post Office goes from £3125 a year ,to £3700. The second deputy director-gen-eral receives an increase of £5OO, bringing his salary to £3300. the salary of the chief engineer in the Electricity Department is raised £5OO to £3500, and the assistant general manager receives a rise of £3OO, giving him £3300 yearly. External Affairs The deputy secretary of External Affairs will now receive £3700 a year—a rise of £5OO. The assistant director of education receives a rise of £7OO, his salary now being £3700. The assistant director (administration) will receive £5OO more, his salary going up to £3500.

The chief deputy commissioner in the Inland Revenue Department gets a rise of £3OO, to £3lOO. . The chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Government Administration, the Minister of Labour, Mr Shand, yesterday assessed the cost of the recent round of State pay rises, ranging from labourers to departmental heads, at £4 million more a ■year.
