(N.Z. P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, June 26. M. Faulkner, the 48-year-old former ’British Open champion, returned a record 67 to lead by three strokes after the--first round of the Dunlop Masters £5350 golf tournament, at Royal Birkdale, Lancashire, yesterday.
His nearest challengers were Sewsanker Sewgolum (South Africa) and Kel Nagle (Australia), who went round in 70. Faulkner had a birdie three at the ninth to be out in a five-under-ecratch 32, and
holed a. six-yard putt for a birdie three at the fifteenth to remain four under fours. He finished with a 10-yard putt for a two at the short seventeenth, and- then holed a 6ft putt for a birdie four on the eighteenth. Faulkner, a colourful sight jn his primrose shirt, shocking pink trousers and black and white shoes, required only 26 putts in the round. He was using a putter he last wielded in 1952. Peter Thomson, runner-up in his first three tournaments on the British circuit this season, had a first round 71.
