NARROW WIN FOR BUS.

Spear Kicks 2 Penalties

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, June 26. Two penalties by the fullback and captain, B. G. Spear, gave Christchurch Boys’ High School a lucky, 6-3 win against Timaru Boys’ High School at Fraser Park today. Christchurch spent 70 per cent of the game in its own territory but the visitors’ defence successfully coped with a stream of Timaru attacks. There was no penetration or finesse about Timaru’s back attack, the three-quar-ters being hampered by a slow service from their fiveeighths, G. M. Hurst and A. R. Park. It was in many respects a disappointing match, the back lines playing only a very minor role oh attack. The Christchurch forwards were beaten for the ball in the line-outs, and when they won the ball from set scrums the half-back, R. J. Stanbury, often was swamped by the opposing half-back, L. T.Livi, and the Timaru flankers. Tireless Worker

The vice-captain and prop forward, D. D. Smith, was a tireless worker in the tight and it was mainly through his leadership that'the Christchurch forwards staged a late rally in the second - half. P. J. Flewellen was the liveliest and most constructive of the loose forwards. Of the Christchurch backs, the fleetest and most dangerous was the right wing, A. J. Mclntyre. .

Spear was a powerful line kicker but was often astray in his positional play at fullback. Livi was an . enterprising half-back for Timaru.

The Timaru • forwards had an excellent glime. R. Field was an outstanding jumper in the line-outs, R. Mahan an admirable leader in the loose and G. Cochrane a hard working prop forward. • J. G. Brown outshone Spear as a full-back and was unlucky in his goal kicking, although he scored Timaru’s only points from a penalty.
