The New Zealand mare, When, finished sixth In a field of eight in the 45,000 dollar Trans-Oceanic Trot at Yonkers Raceway tonight. Italian-owned Pack Hanover proved his reputation as Europe’s top trotter by winnihg the event. He scored a convincing three-lengths victory over Canada’s Sprite Kid, with France’s Oscar R. L. a length and a quarter back, third.
Pack Hanover, an Americanbred horse, owned by Mr Turi Manzoni, of Milan, and driven by Sergio Brighentl, left no doubt of his superiority. He raced to the front with half of the mile-and-a-quarter journey completed. He was the favourite at 5-4 on.
Italy’s Fury Hanover was fourth, France’s Philosophe D. fifth, and New Zealand’s When sixth. Two Russian horses, Legion and Granlt, finished seventh and eight respectively in the eight-horse field. Granlt broke stride in the first furlong and was out of contention but Legion gave a creditable performance, showing an Improvement in the standard of Russian trotters since their first visit to the United States last year. When, having her first start since last June, trotted boldly into the lead after being hard driven for the first lap. She hung on well but had no chance with the winner and clearly needed the outing. The time for the mile and a quarter was comparatively slow. 2min 37 2-ssec. The first four horses will compete against four top American horses in the SO,OOO dollar United Nations Trot at Yonkers next Thursday evening.
