The Department of Statistics is part of the Economic Faculty and offers courses in statistics leading to the honours degree in Arts, Economics and Science. Close co-operation is maintained with a strong group of mathematical statisticians and probability theorists in the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University. Salary on appointment will be in accordance with qualifications and experience within the ranges: Senior Lecturer £A2750 x £AIIO-£A3300 per annum; Lecturer £AI9BO X £AIOO-£A2680 per annum. PLOWMAN, Registrar, School of General Studies. . ■ 2447 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO HAMILTON FOUNDATION CHAIRS AND DEANS THE University of Waikato, a new University established on January 1, 1964, proposes to make appointments to foundation chairs in the Schools of Humanities and Social Studies, and to designate two of the first professors as Deans of those Schools. The School of Humanities and the School of Social Studies will be the first phase of development of the University. Later, Schools of Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences and Commerce will be added, and the possibility of association of the University with teacher training is being investigated. The University is situated on a site of about 126 acres on the outskirts of the City of Hamilton. A first building of some 20,000 square feet has just been completed.

University teaching activities in Hamilton are currently organised as a branch activity of the University of Auckland. In 1965 the University of Waikato will accept its first teaching responsibilities by absorbing the branch and enrolling its own students. Most of the teaching in 1965 will be done by staff at present employed with the branch. The aim is to begin degree courses in the Schools of Humanities and Social Studies in 1966. The academic organisation of the University will be based on Schools of Studies, rather than on faculties and departments, and undergraduate work will be carefully planned through integrated courses of study. The foundation professors Will be expected- to co-operate in planning appropriate courses during 1965, and candidates may wish to indicate in their applications the way in which their own subjects could be related to other subjects in which foundation chairs are being advertised. The attention of candidates is drawn to the report of the Academic Advisory Committee mentioned below. Applications are invited from candidates in the following fields:— English Mathematics History German Psychology Politics French Philosophy Geography Economics Salaries for Professors will be within the range £3250 to £4OOO p.a. Within this range, special consideration will be given to the salary of Deans. Deans will hold office for an Initial term of five years: - their functions will be primarily academic, and adequate administrative assistance will be provided for them. The Vice-Chancellor will be overseas during the period September to October, 1964, and where possible will discuss the plans for the development of the University with those who may be interested in academic posts.
