Chambers Challenge Mr Allen

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 25. Claims in Parliament by Mr A. E. Allen (Govt., Franklin), that bosses were getting untaxed expense allowances “and other perks” of unreasonable amounts, had roused amazement and resentment, said the president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce (Mr T. M. N. Podgers) today. ■

“We challenge Mr Allen to produce instances of such unreasonable tax gains by employers, and we invite him to obtain publicly-expressed support from the Inland Revenue Department for his scurrilous

attack on reputable business persons,” said Mr Rodgers. “If the department prefers to communicate privately with Mr Allen instead of expressing itself publicly, we would be quite content . . . provided Mr Allen publishes the report. “Alternatively, the chambers could confidently rely on the Minister of Finance to give the truth in Parliament . . . and restore the public standing of the business community. “Mr Allen’s excusing theft by workers on the grounds which he sets out, will surely be condemned by others throughout New Zealand, as well as ourselves.”
