Cortina Wins Award
The Ford Cortina has won an “International Car of the Year” award made by the Swiss motor journal “AutoUniversum”. The presentation was made in Nairobi, because this was the site of the car’s most recent win. A Cortina won the East African Safari rally. The award was cited as being given to the Cortina for its “oustanding performance, reliability and versatility in competition around the world.” No other car in any production class had won so many victories in so many different kinds of events as the Cortina and its derivatives. The day after the presentation, about 100 European journalists, who had been present at the presentation, were given the opportunity to drive Cortinas over 170 miles of the rally route, the terrain including twisty, rockstrewn tracks and slippery mud tracks. There was also a driving demonstration by P. Hughes, the winning driver, and three other rally drivers.
