Pit Stops

Works-entered Triumph Spitfires will appear in an international rally for the first time in the Alpine Rally on June 23 to 27. Three cars are being entered by the works and a further one is being entered by Stirling Moss’s racing team and Will be driven by Miss Valerie Pirie. All four cars will use production 1147 c.c. engines with the company’s stage two tune kit: wide timing camshafts and double twinchoke carburettors. Power developed is 90 b.h.p. on a 10 to 1 compression ratio. ¥ ¥ * The “Motor” six hours saloon race at Brands Hatch was won by J. Whitmore and P. Proctor in a Lotus Cortina, and another Lotus Cortina came second. The Mercedes Benz 300 SE driven by E. Bohringer and H. Linge was third. A Ford Galaxie led after the first hour after slicing through the field

from a start at the back of the grid, but then rain started to fall, and the Galaxie dropped back to finish sixth. The best placed Jaguar was seventeenth. A Swiss-entered Chevrolet Impala did not start, and the J. BrabhamD. Hulme Galaxie wrecked its engine in practice. Both Cortinas lost the oil from their differentials when the casings worked loose, but managed to retain their places. Another Lotus Cortina suffered from the same trouble, and wrecked its differential, which was changed in 25 minutes. A B.M.W. 1800 went very fast and held third place for a time before retiring with clutch trouble. The team prize went to Lancias, the fastest lap to the Galaxie. The Jaguar was second in its class. ¥ ¥ ¥ Two out of three worksentered Triumph Spitfires have been acepted as entries for Le Mans. The number one car will be driven by D. Hobbs and R. Slotemaker, and the reserve driver is Jean-Paul Behra, son of the famous racing driver.
