MAGISTRATE “UNHAPPY”
Unlicensed Radio Charges (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 18. Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., said today he was “unhappy at the number of married women” charged with operating unlicensed radio and television sets. He told Mr W. D. Baragwanath, who appeared for the Post Office: “If the husband is the real breadwinner and payer of accounts be should be the one before the Court. I don’t like- to see married women brought to me on the technicality Of their being the-‘occupier’ of the house.” The solicitor said it was difficult for radio inspectors to see husbands when they called at houses, for they were usually at work and would also find it difficult to appear in Court. The 80 persons prosecuted were fined from £1 to £lO, with 30s Court costs and solicitor’s fee of £3 3s in each case.
