Picket Impresses In Training

Picket showed.he is a fit light-weight for the Maronan Handicap at Ashburton with one of the best gallops at Riccarton yesterday morning.

He ran away from Gold Find over six furlongs, finishing six lengths clear and recording Imin 18 3-ssec. He ran the final three furlongs on an easy track in 38 2-ssec.

Picket was ridden by his race rider, B. Collins, and N. Eastwood rode Gold Find. Galloping was done on the No. 6 grass.

Bruin (Swanson) and Foxchief (Collins) recorded lmin 50 l-ssec for their mile, and 41 3-ssec for the final three furlongs. They appeared to be fairly evenly matched ■ at this distance. Knight of York (Wildermoth) was going away from Everglades (Stokes) near the end of a mile run in lmin 52 2-ssec. They worked up to speed steadily, took 30 2-ssec for the opening two furlongs, and quickened to run the last three in 39see. Knight of York should be one of Riccarton’s brightest hopes in minor races at Ashburton. He will run against the hack milers in the Seafield Handicap. FIT HACK .Charlborough (N. Eastwood) was going well on the outside of his stablemate, Silver Kingdom (Moir) after running seven furlongs in lmin 37 3-ssec, the last three in 40 4-ssec. Charlborough could make an impression ■ against the hack stayers in the Mayfield Hack Handicap. Gold Shower (F. H. Skelton) ran six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Lady Merling (Blair) joined in for the last five furlongs, and sprinted the final three keenly in 39 3-ssec. Byair (Low) ran up in the straight to shade Benefice (Swanson) and to finish about a length clear of Bunker (F. H. Skelton) over six furlongs. Waverley shaped as if he will be right at his best for the Maronan Handicap at; Ashburton. Prince Callan (C. T. Wil- 1

son) recorded Imin 22 l-ssec for six furlongs and 39 4-ssec for the final three. It was a fair solo gallop for a nonwinner. Grand Salute (Collins) sprinted six furlongs, the last three in 38 2-ssec. Standout (Wildermoth) also recorded 38 2-ssec, and his stablemate Manana (Stokes) followed in 39 4-ssec.
