COAL FOR JAPAN

Australia Warned (N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, June 17. Australia was in danger of losing its 3,000,000-ton annual coal export to Japan, a prominent Tokyo industrialist warned today when he arrived in Sydney. He is Mr T. Tasaka, executive vice-president of the Fuji Iron and Steel-Co., Ltd., one of the largest Japanese importers of Australian coal.

Mr Tasaka, who is leading a 29-man steel, shipping and trade mission, said poor quality and increasing labour costs were combining to make Australian coal “non-com-petitive.” “We appreciate what Australia has done,in improving her coal-loading facilities, as this allows us to use bigger ships and thus save freight costs,” he said. “But against this we must tell you that the quality of Australian coal ’is not the best. There is a high percentage of ash in every consignment we get—a much too High percentage,” he added.
