EXHAUSTING TRIP

Translators Arrive

Bed, and a long undisturbed rest, were, the first thoughts of a party of 12 translators and secretaries who arrived in Christchurch last night, in readiness for the opening of the 11th International Student Conference on Monday. After a 48-hour trip from Amsterdam by air, and without sleep, the 11 girls and one man (Mr Bernard Rutgers, the head translator) were exhausted.

Not one stop on the route had been longer than threequarters of an hour, Mr Rutgers said. They will be able to have some sleep in this morning, but not much—for they begin work at 10 o’clock.

French, Spanish, Canadian, Dutch and British nationalities are represented in the group, members of which will be recording, translating and typing reports, resolutions and minutes from the conference.

It is the first time any of the girls have been to New Zealand, but three have had previous experience of an International Student Conference.

Ana Maria Kindelan (Spanish), Charlotte de Laive (Dutch) and Denise Khaw (French) attended the 10th conference, held in Canada in 1962, as also did Mr Rutgers. English, Spanish and French are the official langu-. ages to be used at the conference, the first of its type to be held in New Zealand.
