SOCIETY OF ARTS
Combined Show
A new type of exhibition for the Canterbury Society of Arts, and combined one-man show, opened at the Durham Street Art Gallery last evening.
Twenty-three artists had hired the wall space, and were free to show what they wanted from their works. Mrs V. Elsom, who spoke at the opening in place of one of the organisers, Mr J. Oakley, who was indisposed, said it was a good opportunity for an artist to show his range of work. Groups of paintings gave more impact than a single painting. Among the well-known Christchurch painters who exhibited are Olive Beken, Olive and Vy Elsom, Rona Fleming, and Dorothy Robertson, and Ernest Kalnins.
Pottery by Warren Tippet was shown. The featured guest artist was Edith Wall, of Melbourne, daughter of Professor Arnold Wall. Also showing were two works bought by the society from Russell Clark’s recent exhibition, a bronze fibre glass sculpture “Standing Figure,” and “South Westland,” a semi-abstract in oils.
