Two Sites Possible For Police Station
(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 18. The Minister of Works (Mr Allen) told Mr H. J. Walker (Govt., St. Albans) in Parliament today that two proposals for sites for a new police station in Christchurch were under investigation.
Mr Walker had asked what progress, if any, was being made with plans for a new station.
Mr Allen said the plans used for the new Auckland Police Station would be used in a modified form in Christchurch.
Last year, on September 6, the then Minister of Police (Mr Eyre) said during discussion on the estimates for the Police Department, that a new site for the Christchurch Central Station was being investigated. In August, 1962, during the discussion of that year’s estimates, Mr Eyre said the situation regarding the station required urgent attention and a site in Latimer square had been decided on but the station was not on the immediate list for rebuilding.
In last year's discussion, Mr Eyre said the building had been held up because the Ministry of Works had been negotiating for a site of sufficient size.
Last year, the Commissioner of Police (Mr C. L. Spencer) said that a new Central Police Station in Christchurch was the top priority in the police building programme.
Pacts Condemned. The New Zealand and Indonesian Communist parties in a joint statement agreed that A.N.Z.U.S. and S.E.A.T.O. were “aggressive military pacts jeopardising the independence and sovereignty of New Zealand and Indonesia,” the official Antara News Agency reported today.—Djakarta, June 18.
