Hotel Hours
Sir, —I respect Mr D. C. McKie’s views and his hatred of . the abuse of liquor. lam conversant with the statistics regarding alcoholics. I am sympathetic towards genuine alcoholics—that is, persons who are physically allergic to alcohol. ■ Many so described are just gluttons or persons not educated in the proper use of alcoholic liquor. They do not deserve our sympathy. I do not consider it democratic or just that persons prejudiced against liquor should be able to dictate by referendum the most suitable hours for those persons who desire the social use of hotels. This is the responsibility of Parliament and the issue has been shirked too long. This subject is important, as illegal liquor is the basis of gangsterism In the night-life of our cities. The victim desiring social night life is first enticed to sly-grog premises; the next step is the introduction of prostitution; this is followed by drug addiction. The cycle can be broken by sensible legalised hotel hours.—Yours, etc, ADAM. June 16,1964.
