Scrap Iron On Roads
The director of roading (Mr J. H. Mackay) may have some justification for his doubts about the effectiveness of the magnetic truck on South Island roads; but most road-users, conscious of the high price of tyres, will think the service well worth the £2304 it cost last year. It is hard to believe that two pounds of scrap iron a mile would not cause many punctures and ruin many tyres. Motorists have enough punctures on side roads that are not swept by the truck. The most important consideration is that just one bad puncture can cause an accident costing many times £2OOO. Until the National Roads Board can think of a better way of keeping the roads relatively free of scrap iron it should keep its magnetic truck at work.
