Staying Background Of Belmont Winner
■ Although on first appearances the win of Quadrangle in the mile-and-a-half Belmont Stakes was an upset of breeding as well as form, a closer study of. his breeding shows the presence of a number of first-class staying elements. Quadrangle’s sire, Cohoes, failed to win at a distance over lOf furlongs. Cohoes won on a number of occasions, but only twice further than a mile. • His sire, Mahmoud, however, won an English Derby and became a champion American sire, as did' his grandsire, Blenheim 11. Cohoes’ great-grandsire, Blandford, got in all four winners of the’ English Derby,' so inspite of Cohoes’ failure at middle distances this is a strong staying line. Sister The unraced Belle of Troy, Cohoes’ dam, whose only other two starters have both won, is a daughter of the Belmont Stakes winner, Blue Larkspur.
Further, Belle of Troy is a full or half-sister to five stakes winners.in the United States, including Bimelech, winner of the Belmont and Preakness Stakes, and Black Hel.en, winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks and grand dam of the champion steeplechaser, Oedipus. Cohoes’ great-grand dam, Helen de Troie, produced the French Oaks winner, Ardargatis, dam of the French champion, Ardan, and of Gabador.
Quadrangle’s dam, Tap Day, raced only as a two-year-old and was a winner. Quadrangle is her eighth foal and she has now left six winners,- the other two being unraced. Tap Day is a daughter of Bull Lea, several times American champion sire. Bull Lea has sired the Triple Crown winher, Citation, the Derby winners, Hill Gail and Iron Liege, -and the Preakness Stakes winner, Faultless. Tap Day is one of seven winners from as many foals left by her dam, Scurry, which won four races.
