Chathams’ First Frozen Meat

(New Zealand Press Association)

CHATHAM ISLANDS, May 29. The Chatham Islands’ first ever commercial shipment of frozen meat today left the islands in the m.v. Holmburn.

The bulk of the shipment comprises 1100 carcases of wether mutton, and sample consignments of beef, veal and lamb have also been included. The shipment will be landed at Wellington and from there distributed throughout New Zealand. Also aboard the Holmburn is the manager of the recently established freezer abattoir (Mr P. Smith). Mr

Smith carries with him a newspaper article dated London, May 27, 1882, which covers the arrival of the first shipment of New Zealand frozen mutton in London in the sailing ship Dunedin. Mr Smith today said he hoped that with public support the Chatham Islands might rapidly make up the 82 years since the first New Zealand shipment and, like mainland farmers, enjoy a profitable outlet for farm surpluses.
