30-TON TRUCK

Slow Trip To Forest

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, May 28. A giant logging truck owned by New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., took six hours to reach Kinleith from Penrose today. It was a slow but uneventful journey. The truck was over-weight and was not allowed to exceed 30 miles an hour. It has a tare weight of 30 tons and can carry 40 tons of logs. Eighteen tyres are used for the truck and its trailer. There are 16 gears, including four reverse, and two gear boxes.

A special permit was issued to allow the 280 horse-power truck to travel to Kinleith on the State highways. A Canadian engineer sat beside the driver as co-pilot and adviser.

The truck is one of two belonging to Forest Products. Both were made by the Canadian Keworth Motor Company, Ltd., of British Columbia. and will be used to carry timber in the pine forests near Kinleith.

They will work solely on private company roads and will haul as much timber as any four trucks now in use.
