Wine Casks Along Route To Law Ball

Wine was the theme of the decorations for the Law ball put on by the Law Students’ Society of the University of Canterbury at the Winter Garden last evening.

The foyer and lounge were decorated with wine casks, large and small bottles of wine, and a huge bunch of grapes made from balloons, intertwined with vines. In the ballroom bunches of grapes over six feet high, wine casks, huge grape leaves, and trailing vines surrounded the alcoves. From the ceiling hung a cluster of grapes, leaves and vines. Before the ball members of the official party attended a cocktail party. More than 450 guests attended the ball. Specially invited guests included: Mr Justice Macarthur and Mrs Macarthur, Sir Francis Adams and Lady Adams, Judge K. Archer and Mrs Archer, Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., and Mrs Lee, Mr A. P. Blair, S.M., and Mrs Blair, Mr E. S.

J. Crutchley, S.M., and Mrs Crutchley, the president of the Canterbury Law Society (Mr B. McClelland) and Mrs McClelland, Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Canterbury (Professor F. R. Crane) and Mrs Crane, the Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Mr C. H. Perkins) and Mrs Perkins, the Vice-Chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) and Mrs Pownall, the Registrar of the University (Mr G. G. Turbott) and Mrs Turbott, president of the Canterbury branch of the B.M.A. (Mr J. R. M. Dawson) and Mrs Dawson, the Deputy Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith) and Mrs Smith, and the Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) and Mrs Bowie. Members of the committee who organised the ball were: president, Mr A. A. P. Willy; secretary, Mr G. R. Joyce; treasurer, Mr E. O. Sullivan; committee, Messrs D. Holden, B. Hood, A. Tipping, P. Champion, W. Smith, and C. Pateman.
