IF CHURCHES MERGED

Paper Estimates Membership

If an Anglican-Protestant merger took place in New Zealand the united church would have a membership exceeding two million by the time negotiations were completed, says “Church and People,” the official organ of the Anglican Church, newspaper. If four negotiating churches —Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist, and Churches of Christ—merged immediately, it would make a church almost as large as the present Anglican Church. On 1961 census figures it would have 833,159 members, representing 34.3 per cent of the population. This would be only 2000 less than the Anglicans’ total.

If the Anglican Church joined the other four immediately, the membership of the combined church would be 1,668,593, representing 69.09 per cent of the population. There would be about 1600 ministers.
