STATEMENT ON VIETNAM

Mr Kilpatrick’s Explanation

A statement made on May 27 was the unanimous opinion of the council of the Canterbury branch of the United Nations Association and was all that was considered necessary, the president of the branch (Mr H. K. Kilpatrick), said in a statement replying to remarks made by Mr H. J. Walker, M.P., published yesterday. “The only comment I feel called on to make is that Mr Walker has somewhat carelessly read our statement of May 27 as coming from me,” said Mr Kilpatrick. “The statement was the unanimous opinion of our council and was all that we considered necessary in the circumstances. The rest of his remarks are again discourteous and beside the point. “Mr Walker is, however, again invited to attend our next meeting on June 2 to debate the issues and our resolutions if he is prepared to face the questions posed as matters of grave principle, important to all concerned with peace and the welfare of our country.”
