OURUHIA SCHOOL

Anniversary Today

Ouruhia School, in Turners road, celebrates its fiftieth anniversary today with a banquet at the school at midday and a ball in the Ouruhia hall this evening. The school began with one classroom in 1914 and an initial roll of 29 pupils. It was then known as the Turner’s road school, but it later took the name of the district.

The school had its largest roll (75) in 1923, and had the services of three teachers. Today there are 34 oupils, taught by Mr and Mrs H. Gilmore. A school-house has been built on the grounds in recent years. Ouruhia School is proud of its garden, and has won the Macfarlane shield for the best school garden in North Canterbury four times—in 1921, 1932, 1933 and 1960. For three or four years from 1956 it was a model school.

A children’s sports day was held yesterday, and anniversary badges and ribbons were issued to the pupils. There is to be a flag-raising ceremony, roll-call and class photographs today. A church service will be held in the hall at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The organisers expect nearly 200 former pupils and their families to attend. Three of the oldest firstday pupils will be taking an active part in today’s celebrations. One will ring the bell, one will raise the flag before the banquet, and the third will cut the cake during the banquet.
