CHANGES IN TAXATION

Proposals By Farmers A proposal that it should be open to self-employed persons to average their incomes over a period of years for taxation purposes was approved at the annual conference of North Canterbury Federated Farmers. The action was taken on the suggestion of the Amberley branch, and is similar to a resolution approved last year suggesting that income tax should be averaged over a five-year period on the lines of a scheme in Australia but modified to meet New Zealand conditions. Delegates differed on the correct approach, .but agreed that a situtaion existed which required solution.

On the suggestion of the Amuri branch, the conference approved a remit that the method of financing school bus services should be more liberal, to keep people in the country and increase farm production. A Darfield proposal that the farmer who paid for transport of employees’ children to school should be allowed to deduct these payments for taxation was also approved.
