Lottery Grants For Research
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 28. Grants totalling £196,150 from Golden Kiwi profits for scientists and organisations responsible for research were announced today, the grants are:— The Royal Society of New Zealand; £30,000 to purchase a site for a building to house the society in Wellington. Dr. R. C. Cooper, botany department, Auckland Institute and Museum, £4OOO to assist in the collection of plants in the Auckland province.
Dr. A. T. Wilson, chemistry department, Victoria University, £16,000 for the study of the fundamental physical and chemical phenomena involved in the fixation by soil of phosphate and plant and animal nutrients.
Professor D. B. Sawyer, mathematics department, University of Otago, £15,000 towards the purchase of an electronic computer. The Cawthron Institute, Nelson, £15,000 for investigations into the chemical nature of disease resistance.
The Crop Research Division, Lincoln, £21,750 for an electron microscope for use by several scienti'-c institutions located at Lincoln. Professor H. N. Parton, chemistry department, Uni-
versify of Otago, £23,400 for a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer to be used in organic chemical research. Professor B. D. Batt, school of biological science, Massey University, £50,000 for advanced equipment for the detection and measurement of stable and radioactive isotopes. The equipment will be available to several scientific institutions at Palmerston North.
Professor A. L. Rae, sheep husbandry department, Massey University,• £15,000 for an electronic computer. New Zealand pottery and ceramics research association, Gracefield, a further grant of £6OOO for structural research into brick masonry, making a total grant Of £24,420.
