WANGANUI DIVERSION

Tribe Favours Project (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 28. The Ngaii-Tuwharetoa tribe, which owns the land involved in the diversion of the headwaters of the Wanganui river, has advised the Ministry of Works and the Electricity Department that it favours the diversion. Mr P. Hura said today that there had been several tribal meetings and it was now proposed to set aside 800 acres in the Turangi area as a township. “When you realise that £7l million will be involved in the scheme in the Turangi area, you cannot expect the people in that area to speak against the proposal,” he said.
