Mistaken Identity

A report in “The Press” yesterday of the annual meeting of the Canterbury-West-land Division of the National Party, where the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) threatened to resign if a remit from the Rangiora branch was carried, said the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) had threatened to consider his position in the party. In fact, Mr Lake was out of the conference room at the time, and all the remarks attributed to him were made by the Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard).

“I was not there when the remarks were made,” Mr Lake said yesterday. “I had just left the room to answer a telephone call. When I came back I was told: ‘We have just had a bit of fun.’ That is all I know about it except what I have read in the newspapers.”
