Trade Unions
Sir, —Reading the comments of Mr J. R. Hunt, my mind goes back 50 years. Before making any statements Mr Hunt should have procured a copy of the original and present Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. As my memory tells me, the minimum number of people engaged in an industry to have their signatures attached was 12 or more. The unions would have had many more than the figures he is so amused about. Mr Hunt has no idea of the work and efforts of the founders of the different unions. One of their difficulties was to get the immigrants to join. At times we in the workshops had practically to teach these immigrants the rudiments of the trade. Another difficulty was to extract the small weekly subscription. Surely some young members of the Labour Party will put Mr Hunt on a more reliable track than he appears to be wandering.—Yours, etc., PILSUDSKI. May 27, 1964.
