Typists’ Salaries

Sir, —In Thursday’s edition I noticed an advertisement by the Canterbury Education Board for an intermediate shorthand typist, junior examination desirable, and the salary offered up to £l7 a week, according to experience. I believe the New Zealand Clerical Workers’ Union minimum wage for a female in fifth year of service is £7 10s. Would you advise the salary scale for shorthand typists, junior, intermediate and senior, employed by the Government?—Yours, etc., TYPIST.

May 22, 1964. [Salaries for shorthandtypists employed by the Government fell into many different categories, said the Christchurch representative of the State Services Commission (Mr D. C. Duff). They ranged, he said, from £445 to £l2OO a year (both plus the recently announced increase). The public service salary scale showed 16 salary scales for shorthand-typists in the Public Service. In the recently announced increase, applicable from August 1, those on salaries from £9lO and upwards would have a £3O-a-year increase. Those on salaries below £9lO would have increases proportionate to £3O. Further information could be obtained from the local representative of the State Services Commission, listed in the ’phone book under government departments.]
