TENNIS Emerson’s Grand Slam Bid Wrecked

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PARIS, May. 26. In 72. minutes of scin- , filiating tennis, Nicola Pietrangeli, of Italy, wrecked the 1964 “grand slam” hopes of the Australian champion, Roy Emerson, in the French championships in Paris today. Pietrangeli, though in his 31st year, showed he is still one of the world’s best on slow, hard courts by whipping the 27-year-old Australian by '6-1, 6-3, 6-3..

The chunky Italian gave a near-perfect performance of courtcraft. The crowd gave him a standing ovation. Emerson, who had hoped to become the third man in tennis history to achieve

the grand slam of the world’s four major singles titles— Australia, France, Wimbledon and the United States—could do little to check the flow of Pietrangeli’s winners and he contributed to his own downfall with a woeful weakness off the ground on both wings. Pietrangeli’s. triumph puts him into the semi-finals, where he will oppose tall, blonde Swede, Jan Erik Lundquist. Today, Lundquist ended the gallant run of | the young South African, Cliff Drysdale. Showing better control on the vital points, Lundquist beat Drysdale 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

The other semi-finalists are Manuel Santana' (Spain) and Pierre Darmon (France).
